Belafonte had powerful friendships with many influential figures including Martin Luther King. King often retired to Belafonte’s New York apartment to talk strategy – sometimes also to escape the pressures of leading the civil rights movement.
In his final years, Belafonte continued to use his voice on several issues including the protects following the death of George Floyd in 2020.
“We have never had so many White allies, wailing to stand together for freedom, for honor, for a justice that free us all in the end,” he wrote.
The actor is survived by his wife Pamela, his 6 children and 8 grandchildren.
