It’s no secret that we live in a time where movies with high budgets end up being major hits among moviegoers. After all, if you invest big, the chances are high that you’ll get rewarded in kind too. Nowadays, studios often spend hundreds of millions on their productions, and these can bring in a hefty $900 million or more in returns.
While there’s nothing wrong with this, it does tend to stifle the chances of films with a smaller budget. Or so it would seem. As today’s list proves, there are some films with such unique appeal that they manage to be cinematic successes despite their modest budgets. These low budget films paved the way for new talents and made a name for themselves in the movie industry, despite having minimal funds behind them.

The Blair Witch Project (Budget: $60,000, Box Office: $248M)
Released in 1999, The Blair Witch Project was one of the first of its kind: a film based on supposedly recovered footage. It centers on the story of three student filmmakers who go on a hike to film a documentary on the Blair Witch, a local legend in Maryland.
Artisan Entertainment
Being a well-disguised mockumentary, a lot of people went to watch the film with no idea as to whether what they were watching was real or made-up. The film’s marketing campaign turned out to be very successful, leading other films to follow in its footsteps. It made $248 million; an impressive amount compared to how much was spent in producing it.
