While the Disney adaptation struck a lot of controversy following the cast of a black actress, Halle Bailey, ABC will also not star a typically white actress. In fact, ABC has cast Auli’i Cravalho as their Ariel, whom you might know from Moana. She was born in Hawaii to a mother of Native Hawaiian descent and a father of Puerto Rican, Portuguese, Chinese, and Irish descent.
When it comes to villains, the Disney live action movie will star Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, while ABC will have Queen Latifah.
