Robertson was taking part in a top-secret ops mission in May of 1968 when the helicopter he was in was shot down by enemies as it was flying over Laos. He prepared himself for the worst as the helicopter plummeted to the ground. Though he did miraculously manage to survive the crash, he came out of it badly injured.
Robertson was in poor shape when he was captured by Viet Cong forces. He was brought to a hospital where he met a young Vietnamese woman who would eventually. become his wife. Following his escape from captivity, Robertson assumed the name Dang Tan Ngoc and began his new life as a farmer.
