Robertson told Faunce that his wife didn’t want to get into any trouble for helping him escape from his captors decades ago. She knew how traitors were dealt with by the Viet Cong during the war, and she did not want to suffer a similar fate. He revealed that after his escape, he assumed his wife’s dead husband’s identity and the pair went on to live a fairly normal life.
Robertson also told Faunce that he was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. He had always dreamed of serving his country, so he decided to join the military shortly after graduating from high school. Eventually, he and several others were recruited by the CIA in the 1960s to join highly-sensitive top-secret missions in North Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos.
