Shortly after the documentary’s premiere, a report by The Independent alleged that the person claiming to be Robertson was, and always had been, Dang Tan Ngoc, a mixed-race man of French-Vietnamese origin. He was an alleged con man whose scheme was to pretend to be an American Vietnam War veteran to claim military back-pay from the US Government.
A report discovered by The Independent suggests that the man had been impersonating Robertson from as early as 1982. It is likely that the con artist also scammed thousands of dollars from various veteran groups searching for missing prisoners of war. Numerous veterans have already expressed their disgust at Dang Tan Ngoc’s scheme.
