Prior to the reunion, a fingerprint test was conducted to confirm Robertson’s identity. When the results came back, it was discovered that the man claiming to be the long-lost soldier was, in fact, not John Hartley Robertson. This was a devastating blow to the case which left Faunce and Jorgensen in a state of disbelief.
They both had a feeling there might have been a mistake. They still had faith in the man they had spent so much time with, and they did not want to give up that easily. So, they contacted Edward Mahoney, a Green Beret veteran who had trained under Robertson during the war. He had worked closely with Robertson during their days in the military, so Mahoney was someone who could certainly recognize Robertson.
