Iran – officially called the Islamic Republic of Iran – is a country located in Western Asia that is bordered by several other nations, including Iraq, Turkey, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. With a total area of 1,648,195 square kilometers (or 636,372 square miles) and a population of around 81 million, Iran is one of the largest and most populous countries in the world.

Despite being constantly hounded by negative press coverage, there is actually so much more to this country, making it well worth a visit. With its vibrant culture, good food, incredible monuments, and rich history that spans centuries, Iran is certainly one of the most interesting nations in the world.

A Taste of Iran

Due to the country’s location, Iranian cuisine is an interesting blend of Greek, Indian, and Middle Eastern influences. There is an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables, and meat like sheep, lamb, and chicken comprise the basis of a wide variety of dishes. Rice and bread are staples, and black tea is an ancient favorite.

Some notable Iranian dishes include Zereshk Polo Morgh (a rice dish made with saffron and barberries with a chicken and tomato stew), Fesenjan (a dish made with walnuts, pomegranate paste and chicken or duck that is commonly served at weddings), and Khoresht Gheymeh (beef and split pea stew cooked in a tomato base and served with fried potatoes on top). Not to be outdone, Iran’s version of the kebab comes in several varieties and is known to be incomparably succulent and tender.
