The Power Of The Youth
Iran has a particularly youthful population with nearly 70% being under 30 years of age. Iran gives its citizens the right to vote as soon as they turn 15, paving the way for Iran’s youth to become the most politically active among all Islamic nations.
Following the controversial reelection of President Mahmud Ahmadinejad in 2009, Iranians – led largely by the youth – took to the streets in protest. Ahmadinejad’s victory was widely believed to have been a result of vote-rigging, and this did not sit well with Iran’s youth. The protests that followed, which lasted from June 2009 until February 2010, became the largest protest movement in Iran since the Iranian Revolution of 1978-1979.
