Research suggests that 11,700 years ago, mammoths moved away from South America. But then completely disappeared from the face of the Earth soon after.
The mammoth James discovered is actually one of 30 that have been found within the Michigan area. This means that at some point, the area was a place where wooly mammoths retreated to before their extinction. While the mammoth wasn’t alone up in Michigan, it was the largest one ever found.
