Don’t know how to play ping-pong? No problem! The film featured a sneaky little trick during the game of ping-pong. Hanks and his opponent were filmed hitting the air and the ball was just dropped in later with the help of computer imagery to make it seem real. Apart from this scene, there are other illusions in the film too.
The ping-pong scene was what gave Forrest a little bit of fame during his time serving in the army. His skill in playing the game earned him an invitation to play in China, thus bringing a genuine historical moment into the film: President Nixon’s plan to employ “ping-pong” diplomacy as a way to reduce tensions with China.
