Nature’s Largest Mirror
In the Daniel Campos Province in Potosi, Bolivia, you will find the Salar de Uyuni. What is it, you ask? Well, at 4,086 square miles, it is the largest salt flat in the world. Located near the crest of the Andes, the Salar was created through the transformation of numerous prehistoric lakes.
A few meters worth of salt crust covers the Salar. The salt crust is completely flat and rests atop a pool of brine which is brimming with lithium. Because of the clear skies, the flat surface, and the humongous area, the Salar de Uyuni is an ideal place to make altimeter calibrations of the planet’s observation satellites. It also makes for some undeniably stunning photo ops!
