Cotton Ball Clouds
I’m gonna set the record straight: these cotton ball-looking clouds are not Photoshopped and are as real as you and me. This rare phenomenon even has a name: Mammatus clouds. The term originated from the Latin word “mamma” meaning “breast” or “udder” – and appropriately so.
These bubble wrap-like formations actually do look like a bunch of mammas, don’t you think? These magnificent clouds are formed as a result of cold air sinking down, creating thousands of these round pockets. While they look amazing, be on the lookout when you see this cloud formation, as they are usually a sign that a severe thunderstorm is brewing.
