World War II in Pictures: A Look at Our History

Atomic Bombs in Japan
In the final stages of World War II, America detonated two atomic bombs – one over Nagasaki and one over Hiroshima – in what would go down in history as the first and only use of a nuclear weapon in armed conflict. The two bombings caused the death of at least 100,000 people, many of whom were civilians.

Six days after Nagasaki was bombed and the Soviet Union declared war on them, Japan surrendered to the Allies, officially ending World War II. Though the war was finally over, civilians in Japan continue to suffer as they attempted to rebuild their homes and lives in the aftermath of such monumental destruction.
