Mayday
Flying and landing an aircraft is no easy feat, especially when you need to land in the middle of the ocean. Ensign Byron M. Johnson was en route to give support to the Gilberts Operation when he had to crash land his F6F-3.

Luckily, the pilot was able to escape the burning aircraft without serious injury. The plane ruptured its fuel tank when it had to make an emergency landing. The photo shown here was taken on the 2nd of November 1943, when the plane crash-landed on the USS Enterprise.
