Under Fire
When Holland was overcome by the Germans, the government and the royal family fled to London. The Jews in the country were deported to many of the Nazi concentration and extermination camps to be killed off. The standard of living continuously declined as the Germans demanded higher contributions.
Taking Cover
While Germany was generally lenient during the beginning of their occupation, things started to get worse when the war intensified. It eventually led to starvation and lack of fuel in the country. The photo shows a group of people hiding from air strikes using the only cover available to them.
