The Battle of Iwo Jima
Iwo Jima, an island that is part of Japan’s Volcano Islands archipelago, was once counted among the most heavily garrisoned areas in the history of war. The Japanese were always prepared for battle, and the fight with American troops that took place on Iwo Jima proved to be a violent one.

While the US soldiers eventually defeated the Japanese troops, it wasn’t an easy victory. This photograph of soldiers raising the American flag, taken by Joe Rosenthal, soon became the symbol of victory in the Pacific.
