A Shaky Alliance
During the start of World War II, Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia agreed on a pact that would prevent the two from ever going to war with each other. The Nazis broke the treaty when Hitler ordered the launch of Operation Barbossa, invading territories held by the Soviet Union.
Unlikely Allies
The attack led to Russia eventually siding with Allied forces in June 1941, helping them bring an end to the war. This photo shows an American soldier and a Russian soldier in a brotherly hug.
