An Emotional Defeat
The Germans occupied the city of Paris from the 14th of June 1940. The French leaders surrendered, and the Nazis had the city under their control, from the goods, products, museums, and theaters, to the people themselves. The Germans took possession of everything, and even changed the time to reflect their own.

Overcome With Anguish

When the people of Paris realized that the Nazis were taking over their city and there was little they could do about it, they were in shock. This photo shows a Parisian man weeping in despair as it dawns on him that his hometown is no longer free. Paris was liberated on the 25th of August 1944, after the German barracks surrendered.
