D-Day
D-Day, also known as Operation Overlord, took place on the 6th of June, 1944, as a way of freeing France from the German forces. 156,000 soldiers from the Allied forces stormed the beaches of the country in a battle that would take three months to reach a conclusion.

The invasion took extensive planning, from misleading the Nazis about the intended target to actually breaching the heavily fortified coast of the Normandy region. The photo was taken after the German soldiers surrendered to those of the Allied forces.
