In 1980, several homes shaped like domes were built on Marco Island’s coast in the hopes that they would serve as vacation homes. Unfortunately, these were hit by hurricanes and the coastlines eventually shifted, leaving the homes in further out to sea than intended and making them susceptible to water damage and decay. Repairs were deemed to be too costly, and so the coastline agencies ditched the project.
Over the years, the domes have gradually descended further into the water, with some of them collapsing entirely. Several of them are still standing, but due to constant exposure to salt water and hurricanes, it won’t be long before none of them are left.
