At the time of the Hundred Year War, Bodiam Castle was built by soldiers in order to protect East Sussex from the French forces. It was used mainly for defense during the medieval period and its soldiers left the castle over time.
At present, it serves as a reminder of Britain’s history and tourists can cross the moat around the castle to tour the building. While it’s not abandoned in a literal sense, it no longer serves its original purpose which was to defend the British from the French.
