In 1942, numerous sea forts were constructed from the designs of Guy Maunsell in order to protect the UK during World War II. These were built on the Thames and Mersey, but the sea forts were decommissioned just 10 years later.
Each fort consisted of a group of seven buildings on stilts, which in turn surrounded a main command tower. When the fort system was shut down, some people used them to broadcast illegal “pirate” radio stations, although this practice also ceased as the years went by, leaving the forts completely empty.
