The Most Fascinating Discoveries Found on Mars

Even More Spherical Formations
The blueberries weren’t the only opportunity the Opportunity rover had to capture stunning rock formations on Mars. It also had the rare chance to discover this bizarre formation of an accumulation of spheres in 2012. The rover found it at an outcropping called Kirkwood.

Opportunity got a good look at hematite-rich “blueberries” in 2004, but it also picked up a view of this unusual formation in 2012 at an outcrop named Kirkwood.

According to NASA, the spherical formations found at Kirkwood do not contain the iron-rich composition that the blueberries have. The two also have a different structure, distribution, and concentration levels. Even NASA, with great expertise in all things Mars, found this discovery quite puzzling. In the image, you will also see some of the smaller spheres suffering from erosion.
