My Big Fat Greek Wedding was a sleeper hit, managing to be a massive success despite having little promotion involved. Released in 2002, the film was written and starred in by Nia Vardalos. It tells the story of a Greek woman who falls in love with and marries a non-Greek man.

The film shows the struggles of this young Greek woman against the culture and traditions of motherhood and marriage. The portrayal of her family dynamics seemed to strike an emotional chord with a lot of people, regardless of culture, hence the success of the film at the box office.
