Following in the footsteps of The Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity was built with a similar “found footage” framework. It was shot over just seven days, with nothing more than security cameras and a handheld camcorder. It was directed by Oren Peli, a fresh face in the industry with no prior filmmaking experience. Thanks to the movie, his career shot to greater heights.

Not only did the film make a whopping $193 million at the box office, but it also paved the way for a handful of sequels in the franchise. It was produced by Blumhouse Productions, a company known for investing in new talents and producing major films at low budgets.
