The Getty family amassed most of its wealth from the oil market. The beginnings of the family business can be traced back to 1916, in the time of George Franklin and his son, Jean Paul Getty. The father and son duo took to the oil industry with gusto.
Jean Paul was enormously wealthy, but he was also very frugal. The 2017 film, All The Money In The World, was inspired by his story. The film tells the story of a man who refused to pay for his grandson’s ransom during a kidnapping. While the Marshall family may be the weirdest, the Gettys have the dubious honor of being one of the saddest dynasties in American history.
