The Boat Resting Place
Though few people know about it, in New York City, there exists a graveyard for boats. Locals call it Staten Island’s boat graveyard. The marine scrapyard was founded in the 1930s and is located in the Arthur Kill in Rossville, off the northern shore of the borough. It is the official dumpsite of barges, decommissioned ferries, and tugboats.

The boat graveyard was initially used as a salvage yard, where old boats were disassembled and their parts individually sold. The project was eventually abandoned, turning the site into little more than a final resting place for old and forgotten boats. Over 100 vessels may be found decomposing in the site today. The graveyard has become a popular destination, primarily for photographers.
