The Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi
At first glance, you would probably mistake this photo for one of the great fortresses in the hit TV show, Game of Thrones. However, this historical site is actually not a fortress, but a church. Located in Umbria, Italy, the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi has been around for centuries, starting in 1228. Unfortunately, this spectacular view may only be accessed by drone.
The Basilica has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2000. Built into a hillside, it is made up of two churches and the crypt where the remains of Saint Francis of Assisi lies. Saint Francis grew up and passed away in the town of Assisi, making it one of the most critical sites in the Christian pilgrimage in Italy.
