Star-Shaped

This star-shaped fortress in the middle of a field is worth a visit if you happen to be in the Netherlands. Fort Bourtange is located in the village of Bourtange and its construction was completed in 1593 under the orders of William the Silent. At the time, it served as a line of defense against invading forces near the German border.

The fort was eventually abandoned and then turned into a village around 1851. Living conditions, however, continued to deteriorate over the years. By 1960, the government decided to take action, turning the entire fortress into a historical museum. The surrounding areas, such as the moat and forest, are also maintained by the museum, which continues to be one of the most popular attractions in the area.
