This particular stretch of the Beijing-Hong Kong-Macau Expressway boasts 25 lanes in each direction. Still, it failed to keep up with the deluge of vehicles during one particular busy holiday in 2015. According to sources, the traffic jam lasted for almost two weeks, with many drivers moving only one mile per day.
This now-infamous photo was taken at the end of Golden Week in October of 2015. Golden Week is a semi-annual seven or eight-day national holiday to celebrate the Lunar New Year (January or February), National Day (October) and Labour Day (May). With such a long holiday at their disposal, many people use the time to head out of town with friends and family, go sightseeing, or visit their hometown.
