The US military boasts an impressive collection of weapons and other equipment, including a fleet of state-of-the-art aircraft deployed around the world. These aircraft have been photographed in action numerous times, but what happens to them when they are retired from service?
The 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group in Tucson, Arizona, otherwise known as “The Boneyard,” is home to more than 4,000 retired military aircraft. Its capacity makes it the largest aircraft storage and preservation facility in the world. Its location in the desert makes it an ideal place to store planes, as there is very little humidity to corrode metal.
