Science on Ice: All The Most Incredible Discoveries

The Walking Dead?
Can you imagine what it would be like discovering something completely frozen inside a block of ice, only to realize once it defrosts that it is still actually alive? That would be a pretty freaky scenario, to say the least! Apparently, not all things found in ice were trapped there by accident. Certain species of alligators, for example, are built to survive the harmful winter cold through the process of hibernation.

Amazingly enough, these critters have the physical ability to slow the functions of their internal organs, preserving them in the freezing waters. Whereas humans would perish after even a short time in such low temperatures, alligators consider it a natural part of the circle of life. When they are in the depths of their frozen hibernation state, it is easy to mistake them for being dead; a potentially fatal mistake if they’re just gearing up for their first meal of the new season!
