Nope, it’s not exactly what it sounds like. We’re not talking about a stick that is made by or out of gophers. Rather, it’s a device used to attract and capture gophers. How does it work? The trapper would loop a snare around a strong carved stick, connected to a strong cord.

Applying tension to the cord enabled ancient humans to catch gophers as they emerged from their holes. This gopher stick, in particular, was around 1,800 years old. It’s amazing to know that people from almost 2,000 years ago already had the intelligence to make such a strange but brilliant trap.
