Science on Ice: All The Most Incredible Discoveries

Arctic Ice Patches
Arctic ice patches are deteriorating rapidly in areas affected by global warming. These patches are formed when snow accumulates and does not melt from the previous year. When layers of ice pile together, they create an ice patch; basically, a layer of ice covered in snow. These patches are extremely difficult to melt.

Arctic animals tend to hang out on these ice patches. When they die, their bodies sometimes get solidified on the layer of ice. But, more often than not, it’s the things they leave behind that are discovered by scientists. Tom Andrews was the first person who began investigating these patches. He was able to acquire enough funding to start studies in Alaska and the Canadian Arctic.
