Inti, The Sun God
Sticking with the Inca for a moment, rituals paying tribute to their sun god, Inti, involved human sacrifice too. Their god-pleasing method was even more brutal when it came to Inti: children were exposed to extreme heights and freezing weather. Sadly, the Incas never questioned nor took stock of whether these rituals were proving effective before sacrificing each new round of innocent little ones.
The one consolation for us modern folk is that the intense cold allowed for the incredible preservation of the children’s bodies. For example, one boy was found in such well-preserved condition that scientists were able to glean a massive amount of knowledge from their examination of his body. This information included the child’s blood type (O, in case you were wondering), his age (about eight or nine), and social status (upper class). Apparently, even those of high social ranking were not kept safe from these brutal rituals.
