In the late 1800s, tortoiseshell combs became a trend, however, most weren’t really made from tortoiseshell. Instead, they were made using a highly combustible and very unstable celluloid compound. The combs didn’t have to be exposed to fire to explode. Simply get one close to a heat source and you were at risk of seeing it explode.
