A woman’s hair is her crowning glory and during the 17th century, hairstyles literally reached monumental heights. It was a time when balls were common and women dressed to impress. Hairstyles were of vital importance, with coiffures of different heights making an appearance.
During the same period, ballrooms were lit up using grand chandeliers, with candles as the main source of light. Given the towering height of the women’s hairstyles, there was a great risk of their hair catching fire and burning up. That’s one way to light up a room with your presence.
