White skin was considered to be more than a fashion trend in the past. It was a status symbol of the rich and powerful, indicating that you were wealthy enough not to have to spend any time out in the sun. Achieving pale skin was not only popular among women but in men too.
One way to achieve paler skin was by using white makeup that had a lead base. As we’ve since learned, lead is a poisonous element that can certainly cause whiter skin but will also eat away at its surface and into the deeper layers. This corrosion of the skin only inspired the wearer to use more of the hideous makeup, eventually leading to lead poisoning.
