The English are many things and inventive is definitely one of them. Back in Regency times, people used a mixture of gunpowder and alum to clean their teeth. You have to give them props for their dedication to science as this is just one of many concoctions they experimented with.
Gunpowder is a substance that burns quickly, acting as a propellant in firearms. It was invented in China and is the first known chemical explosive. Alum, on the other hand, is a chemical compound that promotes teeth whitening and helps prevent gum disease.
