Tampering with Tampons

Believe it or not, tampons have been around for thousands of years. Studies show that Egyptian women used tampons made of soft papyrus while Roman women used tampons made of wool. The Romans also soaked their tampons in different substances, like opium for pain relief and belladonna to dilate the cervix.

Nowadays, tampons are made of rayon or a cottonrayon blend. There are also now pure, organic cotton ones, descendants of the first commercial tampons invented early in the 20th century by Dr. Earle Haas.
