Cold sores are a common viral infection that appear as tiny blisters filled with fluid around the mouth. The condition is caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 and can be passed on to others through saliva and skin contact. There was an outbreak of cold sores in the past, and their choice of treatment was mercury.
Mercury is a very toxic metal element. It stays in a liquid state at room temperature and someone apparently thought it would be a good idea to apply this to the cold sores to treat them. Needless to say, it definitely did not work.
