X the Hair with X-Ray

X-rays, a form of electromagnetic radiation, were discovered in the year 1895 by Wilhelm Roentgen. Nowadays, they are primarily used to make the invisible visible; bones in the body being the most common example. During the early 20th century, x-rays were also used to remove body hair.

Patients who didn’t want hair on their body were exposed to the deadly rays for a maximum period of 20 hours, in order to remove body hair. It wasn’t until these people developed aggressive cancer that x-rays (in excess) were found to have a harmful effect on the body.
