Pretty Poison

Now that we have grown smarter about the effects of using synthetic products on our skin, a lot of people are looking toward natural ingredients and alternatives to beauty products. For women of the 16th and 17th century, their choice of plant for making themselves beautiful was Belladonna.

Belladonna is a known poison and hallucinogen. Women used to take it in liquid form to dilate their pupils, helping them achieve a more attractive look (though the plant’s hallucinogenic properties may have caused them to spend more time talking to a lamp post than their prospective beau). They’d also rub the leaves on their cheeks, giving them a flushed appearance.
