Medal of Honor
During the scene when Forrest receives a Medal of Honor, the producers added a little cinema magic of their own. They used real footage of Sammy Davis when he received his Medal of Honor from President Lyndon B. Johnson and edited it digitally to replace Davis’ head with that of Hanks.

Sammy Davis joined the army in 1965, right when he got out of high school. He was assigned to the 4th Artillery, just like his father who served as an artilleryman during World War II. After his training, he filed a request to go to Vietnam where he engaged in a night-long battle at Cai Lay.
