Iranians enjoy several official public holidays throughout the year – 25 to be exact. There are also other unofficial ones that are being added each year. The excessive number of holidays has been a cause of concern for business owners, educators, and lawmakers for the past 30 years. Most of these holidays are religious in nature, commemorating the birth or death of Shi’a Imams.
There have been numerous efforts to resolve this issue of late, including a proposal to remove four of the holidays. Aside from excessive days off, however, Iran has another economic dilemma to contend with: the country’s concept of a weekend is also quite unique, making it more difficult to align its economic activities with other countries, especially its neighbors.
