Not many outsiders know this, but Iran is actually home to several volcanoes. A number of these are active, meaning they could erupt at any time. The most famous of these volcanoes is Mount Damavand, located just 66 kilometers away from Tehran.
Mount Damavand last erupted around 5300 BC. It is the highest volcano in Asia and is also the highest peak in Iran. It’s home to a number of plant and animal species, such as the Persian leopard, the Syrian brown bear, the snow vole, as well as numerous species of birds. Due to its beauty and prominence, it has become an important symbol in Persian mythology, poetry, and literature. It also appears in Zoroastrian texts and mythology, where it is believed to be the home of a three-headed dragon.
