Temporary Marriages
Nikah mut’ah, also known as Sigheh, is a rather unique marriage practice in Twelver, the largest branch of Shia Islam. These are short-term marriages that can last for a few hours or a few years, depending on what has been agreed upon in advance.
As in other forms of marriage in Islam, a verbal or written declaration of one’s intent to marry and an acceptance of the terms of the marriage by both parties are required. Once the contract ends, the wife must undergo a period of abstinence called iddah, which is also the same period of abstinence that recently-widowed or divorced women must go through.
