Iran’s most famous exports may be oil and carpets, but this nation is the source of other commodities as well. Iran is currently the world’s largest producer of caviar, saffron, and pistachios, which are exported to many different parts of the world. Caviar, in particular, is largely seen as a status symbol in the West.
Iran currently controls around 50% of the caviar market in the Caspian Sea. The beluga caviar, made from the eggs of the beluga sturgeon, is the most expensive type of caviar, with prices at a minimum of $7,000 per kilogram. Unfortunately, this species of fish is rapidly disappearing, largely due to overfishing.
