A Culturally Diverse Nation
98% of Iran’s population identify as Muslims, with 89% of them adhering to the Shia branch of Islam, and 9% adhering to the Sunni branch of Islam. The remaining 2% of Iranians adhere to other religions such as Christianity, Judaism, Zoroastrianism, and Baha’i.
Iran is an incredibly diverse nation, and its heterogeneity is not just evident in the religions its people adhere to. Iran is home to eight main ethnic groups who speak different languages and have their own distinct cultural practices. These groups are Iranians (61%), Azeri (16%), Kurds (10%), Lur (6%), Baloch (2%), Arabs (2%), Turkmen, and Turkic tribes (2%).
